Beauty Behind the Wall

"Being kind to others will not cost you anything, but its priceless to the one on the receiving end of your kindness."

Just recently, I was fortunate enough to be able to participate in the Beauty Behind the Wall program - an initiative by KDYTM Tengku Puan Pahang Tunku Hajah Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah in collaboration with Resorts World Genting.

Through this program, Her Royal Highness aims to rehabilitate female inmates of the Bentong Prison through culinary skills while equipping them with the necessary work skills that will facilitate their reintegration into the society in the future. With emphasis given on educating the female inmates as well as female staffs of the Bentong Prison on food hygiene, culinary technology, dietary nutrition, kitchen management, recipe commercialization and business opportunities, they will be properly informed on the ways of supporting themselves in the future.

On the day of the program launch, Chef Alex Vitalise of Resorts World Genting conducted a cooking demonstration using recipes from cookbooks written by Her Royal Highness. Dishes prepared were essentially Western, yet easily adaptable to the Asian tastes.

This program appealed to me because of its objective - to give second chances.

According to Her Royal Highness: "Everyone can make mistakes, but what is important is that we learn from our mistakes and that the society also gives us an opportunity to prove that." She further added that: "My role is to help these women re-enter society with the right kind of attitude and the right kind of aptitude that will allow them to live a healthy, productive life beyond these walls. Food is something that brings Malaysians together, so it seems appropriate that food should be the channel for these women."

"Even if I manage to make a difference in just one woman's life, then all this effort would have been worthwhile."

Beauty Behind the Wall is a beautiful initiative by KDYTM Tengku Puan Pahang & Resorts World Genting. I simply cannot wait to see the differences this program can bring to the female inmates of the Bentong Prison, and I hope this effort can be reciprocated across the country!
