Batik is a traditional art form in Malaysia with a long and rich history. The word "batik" originates from the Javanese word "ambatik" which means "to draw with dots". Batik making involves drawing intricate patterns on fabric using hot wax and dye. The east coast batik designs are influenced by Thai, Indian and Chinese motifs. In the 15th century, batik was introduced in the northern Malay state of Kedah. As trade flourished, batik spread to other states like Perak, Selangor and Negeri Sembilan on the west coast. Today, batik is one of Malaysia's national heritage arts and an important cultural identity. The major batik producing states are Kelantan, Terengganu, Kedah, Perak and Selangor.
