Must-See in Croatia: Plitvice Lakes National Park

Saturday, November 18, 2017
The Plitvice Lakes National Park is a must-see in Croatia. Here's a guide to help you plan your visit to this beautiful destination!

Plitvice Lakes in Croatia
Must-See in Croatia: Plitviče Lakes National Park

Must-See in Croatia: Plitvice Lakes National Park

The Oldest and Largest National Park in Croatia

Like the postcards, the terraced Plitviče Lakes look just as mythical, beautiful and surreal in real life. The shades of emerald are almost ethereal, and the purity of the water is clear to the point of transparency. Nacionalni Park Plitvička Jezera is the largest and oldest national park in Croatia. Scattered among the mountainous karsts and teeming plant life of Lika-Senj, it consists of 16 crystalline lakes arranged in cascades - all interconnected by waterfalls and subterranean karst rivers.

Throughout the year, the lakes give out distinctive colors which range from azure to bright green or blue. The continually-evolving colors and formation is affected by the sunlight and the volume of organisms and minerals present in the water.

Plitviče Lakes National Park Walking Trail

The estimated time required to complete the walking circuit is about 3 hours. While dining options are available within the park, visitors are encouraged to get properly fueled and hydrated before the walk. During the visit, fishing and swimming in the lakes are prohibited. For recommended routes and how to get around the park, click here.

Sunday, November 12, 2017
Let's talk about Southeast European cuisine.

It's never dry. It's greasy, but deliciously so. The ingredient is dominantly meat paired with powerful seasonings in the right amount. Sour cream makes the best topping, and flatbread seems to always come in handy.

Most of the countries in this region share the same national dish. From grilled meat to meat perfectly cocooned in hollowed vegetables, every Balkan dish is an experience of tastes in humble liberality. Listed below are 10 Balkan dishes you must try in Southeast Europe.

10 Balkan Dishes You Must Try in Southeast Europe

Ćevapi

Irresistibly succulent in bite-sized pieces, these grilled skinless sausages are made of minced beef and can very commonly be found in eateries. Considered the national dish of BiH and Serbia, they are served on a flatbread along with chopped onions, kajmak, thick sour cream, and ajvar.

Burek

Known locally as pita, Burek can be enjoyed any time of the day. Lightly crisped on the outside and incredibly meaty inside, the pastry is traditionally rolled into a spiral using egg as the binding agent. Not a fan of meat? Sink your teeth into other filling variants, including cheese (sirnica), potatoes (krompiruša), or spinach and cheese (zeljanica).

Top 6 Historical Places to Visit in Phnom Penh

Top 6 Historical Places to Visit in Phnom Penh

I am madly in love with Indochina.

As development gradually takes its course, this region managed to reverently preserve its rich cultural heritage - making any travel experience here both eye-opening and humbling. I returned to Cambodia for the second time, after having traveled to Siem Reap two years ago to explore the majestic temples and ancient relics left behind by the Khmer Empire.

Phnom Penh is noticeably more dynamic when compared to Siem Reap. Buildings are taller, more cars occupy the roads, while the famed NagaWorld sits loftily in the heart of the capital. From the very moment you set foot here, you have been extended the invitation to immerse in the bustling metropolis' offbeat adventures.

Fortunately, the historical landmarks in this city are plentiful and undeterred by modernization. Listed below are the top 6 historical places to visit in Phnom Penh for those seeking to learn about this exotic country and how it has come to be.

Hiking at Bukit Kiara, Taman Tun Dr Ismail

The centrally located Bukit Kiara makes a convenient jogging, cycling and hiking spot among outdoor enthusiasts. For occasional joggers, the pavements are spacious and well-maintained. For hiking novices, the hill offers several beginner trails amidst a lush, verdant terrain.

Located next to urban sprawl of TTDI, Bukit Kiara offers several tracks catered for different level of fitness. Besides having a jogging trail encircling a lake, it also provides a slightly more challenging route for steep uphill and downhill running, as well as higher, narrow forest trails for the venturesome.

While the hill is abundant in wildlife, monkeys and mosquitoes are noticeably more rampant. As you ascend higher onto the hill, you will be greeted by old, unfaltering trees and well-trodden paths, as it is a popular playground among mountain bikers.

Difficulty: Easy
Distance: 4 kilometers
Duration: 2 hours
Entrance fee: Free
What you'll need: Plenty of mosquito repellent, water, and if necessary, a stick to fend off monkeys

Tips

  • It starts to get dark around 7.30pm, so be sure to plan ahead.
  • You might find yourself walking in circles as the trails are not well-marked and there are many forks.
  • There isn't any elaborate map for the trails online. Check Google Maps before hiking as the trails can lead you to Sri Hartamas and Mont Kiara!

Nyepi: A Day of Silence in Bali

Bali's New Year's Day
Nyepi: A Day of Silence in Bali

In other parts of the world, the New Year is celebrated with laughter and indefatigable joy.
In Bali, the island hushes up and retreats into being the quietest place on earth for 24 hours.

Nyepi is the national day of silence in Bali. It is a day for devotees to honor the Hindu New Year through self-reflection, meditation and fasting. There are four elements to the Nyepi ritual, including Amati Geni (to not light up fire/switch on lights), Amati Karya (to not work), Amati Lelunganan (to not travel), and Amati Lelanguan (to fast & abstain).

Versatile Lowepro Lifestyle Bags For Effortless Traveling

For me, a good travel backpack should be three things: hard-wearing, lightweight, and easy to carry. I had a traumatic experience when my bag gave way as I was trotting through chilly Sweden, and I made it a point since then to only use bags of brands I know is reliable. Among others, Lowepro is one I can trust.

Recipe: Red Wine Braised Pasta With Pork Chunks

It's the sound it makes when the first drop of wine hits the scorching pan. It's the way the delicate aroma from the seething wine soar high and into your nose. It's the way the wine is reduced to expose the velvety pasta which has magically mutated into enthralling red cords.

Red wine and pasta are two of my favorite things, and this recipe could not have come at a better time.

10 Most Popular Ramadan Food in Malaysia

Saturday, June 10, 2017
Many have claimed that Malaysians are more passionate about food than their politics.
Well, it's true. Here, food is the peacekeeper - the most effective unifying factor among the diverse multiracial communities.

Take Ramadan for example. It is a month when the Muslims fast, but once the sun sinks beneath the horizon, Malaysians come together regardless of race and culture to enjoy a scrumptious meal which very often is accompanied by laughter and cordiality.

Despite being a Muslim country, Malaysia is visibly more liberal when compared to the Middle East. I spent two weeks in Dubai and Bahrain during Ramadan, where eateries were closed (except in upper-class hotels and food courts in malls) and it was an offence to eat in public during the day.

Malaysia may not have a lot to offer to its visitors, but it is second to none when it comes to food. If you wish to join in the fun, here are the 10 most popular Ramadan food in Malaysia you must try throughout this month.
