Tanjung Dawai is a small fishing village in Merbok, Kedah Darul Aman. It is located about 30 kilometres away from Sungai Petani, which is Kedah’s largest town. The Fishing Village of Tanjung Dawai, Kedah

Tanjung Dawai is most popularly known for its fresh seafood produce. Many of the villagers are fishermen and they make their living off the sea. The jetty at Tanjung Dawai was built to facilitate small-scale fishing operations. In the morning, it bustles with activities as the fishermen sort out their catch of the day, hose down their boats, and catch up with each other.

Fresh Seafood at Arked Tanjung Dawai Market

Once you have arrived at Tanjung Dawai, head over to the complex to shop for fresh and dried seafood produce. Stay on the lookout for succulent mantis prawns that will make a simple yet delicious dish when cooked with chilli and eaten with piping hot rice! You can also find Horseshoe crabs here (Ikan Belangkas) that are typically grilled or steamed with aromatic ginger. Other than that, do not miss the opportunity to buy fresh croakers (Ikan Gelama) or eeltail catfish (Ikan Sembilang). Generally, the seafood prices here depend on the supply from the catch, but are nevertheless significantly cheaper than in the cities.

You will also find other products such as dried, salted, and preserved fish here. Many visitors especially look forward to buying a type of fermented shrimp paste known as belacan, which is a popular local condiment in Malaysia. All of these items are neatly arranged with their prices clearly displayed.

As the prices are lower than what you would find in the city, remember to stock up on these durable dried seafood when you are here to prepare for days when you want to whip up local dishes at home!

Fresh Kedah-style Keropok Lekor

If there is absolutely one thing that you have to buy at the Tanjung Dawai market, it is keropok lekor - a well-loved traditional snack in Malaysia. It is made from fish, sago flour, salt, and sugar, then moulded into thick sausages and deep-fried in hot palm oil. A sweet and spicy chilli dipping sauce is a must to go with these crispy, chewy fish crackers. For many Malaysians, keropok lekor is their favourite snack for any time of the day. It is tasty, cheap, and can easily be found!

What to Eat at Tanjung Dawai, Kedah

The food you find in this village is simple yet amazing. The entire dining experience is made perfect thanks to the clean air, beautiful natural sceneries and a less hectic pace of life. Once you are done with seafood shopping, make your way to the stalls located on the ground floor of the building. Satisfy your well-worked up appetite with the mouth-watering Mee Udang, or the famous Laksa Kedah. It is a mildly spicy noodle dish prepared using dried shrimp paste, chilli and fish in an asam-flavoured gravy.

Next, quench your thirst with some fresh coconut water. Drink it directly from the fruit with a straw for a truly local experience. Do not forget to try the Ais Kacang - a uniquely Malaysian shaved ice dessert drizzled with colourful syrup, served atop a bed of kidney beans, sweetened corn, peanuts, and a scoop of ice-cream. End your meal with some local fruits or even Rojak Buah - a traditional salad of fruits and vegetables consisting of pineapples, cucumber, young mango, bean sprouts and water guava, coated evenly with a glorious mixture of fermented shrimp and chilli paste, lime juice and tamarind.

Tanjung Dawai Seafood Restaurants

There are several Chinese and halal Malay restaurants in Tanjung Dawai which serve delicious grilled fish or Ikan Bakar and other seafood dishes. You have the option to buy your own seafood from Arked Tanjung Dawai or the local fishermen, and have them cooked in the restaurants in the style and sauce of your choice.

As the sun sets, the beach starts teeming with life as restaurants open for business. It would certainly be a heavenly experience as you dig into the fresh seafood that’s been grilled to perfection, while you enjoy the soothing breeze and the stunning view in front of you. Be lulled by the gentle rolling waves as the descending sun paints the sky with a gorgeous tapestry of colours.

Restaurants open as early as 5.30am here, where ‘mixed rice’ or Nasi Campur can most commonly be found. It is a plate of white rice served with your choice of seafood, meat and vegetables. Have a good cup of coffee with your meal as you take in the view of the ocean ahead.

Visit Pantai Merdeka at Kota Kuala Muda, Kedah

Tanjung Dawai is usually busier during the weekends and holiday season. To escape the crowd, you can visit the beautiful Merdeka Beach which is famed for its unique red rock formation and a historic British World War II bunker. Merdeka Beach is accessible from Tanjung Dawai via a speed boat ride across the Merbok river. There are several hotels at Pantai Merdeka, such as the Mai Restu Chalet, Chinta Chalet and Impian Homestay.

Tanjung Dawai Resorts and Hotels

Popular accommodations here include The Jerai Hill Resort and Purest Hotel Sungai Petani.

How to Get to Tanjung Dawai, Kedah

From here, enjoy a scenic drive along Kampung Kechik and Kampung Sungai Pial with golden paddy fields to your left and right until you reach the jetty.

What to Expect in Ko Phi Phi, Thailand

Monday, January 18, 2021

The Phi Phi Islands (pronounced pee-pee) are a group of small islands located close to Phuket, and is under the administration of the Krabi province. The most popular islands in this region are Ko Phi Phi Don - the biggest and most populated island, and Ko Phi Phi Le - the second largest island with a few of the most beautiful beaches. Other destinations include Ko Mai Phai or the Bamboo Island, Bida Nok, and Bida Nai which can be reached using long-tail boats or speedboats from the busy piers in Phuket and Krabi.

Why are the Phi Phi Islands Popular?

In 2000, Ko Phi Phi Le was used as the location to film the highly acclaimed movie, The Beach, which starred Leonardo DiCaprio. This attracted hordes of tourists to the island and as a result, contributed to its environmental degradation. On top of that, the Viking Cave located on Ko Phi Phi Le is where edible bird's nests are harvested in large volume.

Ko Phi Phi Tsunami

On Boxing Day in December 2004, Ko Phi Phi was devastated by the Indian Ocean Tsunami where approximately 800 people were missing and 4,000 people were believed to have been killed. Almost all the infrastructures on the island was destroyed. Today, the island has been equipped with various evacuation sites and locals have been trained on the ways to react in the event of potential disasters.

Traveling to Ko Phi Phi? Read this article to learn about what to expect when you are on this island!

Editor's note: This article was first published in February 2014.

What to Expect in Ko Phi Phi, Thailand

Currency Exchange in Ko Phi Phi

During my stay on the island, I couldn't help but to notice that there was only one money changer running in a yellow booth in Ton Sai, and the rates were, well, pretty bad. There are plenty of ATMs around, but if you are the kind to skimp, then do not expect anything more than a decent rate.

My advice? Sock away with Thai bahts enough to last you throughout your time on the island before heading there.

Ko Phi Phi: A Party Island

Ko Phi Phi is unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on the purpose of your travel) a haven for party animals. If you are staying along the beach at Lo Dalum (which is teeming with backpackers hostels and dorms), then brace yourself because the deafening music will not stop until it's four in the morning.

My advice? Getting wasted and to party all night long is not everyone's definition of travel. For a languid stay, head to one of those bungalows in Long Beach instead.

Washrooms at Ko Phi Phi

I was at Slinky Beach Bar when I had one too many drinks and there wasn't anything that I needed more than having to use a washroom. You can probably imagine how outraged I was when two men stopped me right at the entrance to the washrooms and demanded for 10 baht.

My advice? Keep some change with you. You'll never know when you'll need them the most.

Ko Phi Phi Beaches

There is no denying that the water is crystal clear and that it is ideal for snorkeling. To reach to a water level deep enough for a pleasant swim, however, will require that you take at least a three minutes walk into the sea. Otherwise, it's just your feet taking in all the pleasure.

My advice? Well, walk. (Is there really an alternative?) Just be careful not to step on the corals. I did, and I came back with three bleeding toes.

Ko Phi Phi or Ibiza?

Turns out, you will not even be able to tell the difference.

Everything on this island has been adapted to the needs of Westerners, so much so that most restaurants, bars and hotels are designed and named that way. Do not be surprised to see Westerners serving you drinks/food here. They are either broke backpackers, or just some lovely people who are too madly in love with the island to leave it.

Guilin Rice Noodles: Best Food in Guilin

Saturday, January 16, 2021
Guilin has so much more to offer than just streaming rivers and oddly warped karsts. It often takes tourists by surprise with its impressive assortment of local delicacies, notably the Guilin Rice Noodle.

Guilin Rice Noodles: Best Food in Guilin

Guilin Rice Noodles: Best Food in Guilin

Guilin Rice Noodles or Guilin Mifen is a noodle dish extensively consumed in Guilin, a picturesque city in northeast Guangxi. It is plenty and cheap, tasty, and loaded with delectable flavors.

A street food and family meal since the establishment of the Qin Dynasty 2000 years ago, it has survived the test of time to reign as the most popular dish in Guilin and its neighboring cities. It can be consumed as breakfast, dinner, or lunch, and offers the ultimate culinary satisfaction thanks to the large variety of toppings and accompanying condiments.

Guilin Rice Noodles Recipe & Ingredients

This is a dish loved by practically everyone – from playful toddlers to manual laborers – and can easily be found on any street in Guilin. The white strips of rice noodles are soft and smooth with different thickness and forms. Made using rice flour starch, they are either round or flat, and are served in a plain, mild broth which has been slow-boiled for hours with cinnamon sticks, ginger slices, meat and tangerine peels.

The most unique feature of this dish lays in the interesting choices of toppings, which include sour bamboo shoots, pickled green beans, roasted peanuts, pickled soy beans, pickled cabbage, scallions, coriander leaves, dry toasted chili flakes, pickled white radish, served alongside slices of meat, typically pork or beef.

Since there isn't a standard recipe for the beloved Guilin Rice Noodles, the taste varies in every shop. This makes it an adventure of its own, hopping from shop to shop to find one most appealing to your taste buds!

How to Eat Guilin Noodles

Look around and you will immediately notice cleaned and chopped fresh and pickled vegetables being displayed buffet-style across a table (usually at one of the less crowded corners) of the shop. Feel free to add whichever toppings you prefer onto your bowl of Guilin noodles, such as pickled beans, green onion, pickled white radish, fried peanuts, and chili paste. Every type of topping contributes a distinctive texture and flavor to the dish, so it is highly recommended that you put in a little (or a lot) of everything!

Guilin noodles are typically prepared in three sizes: small, medium and large (一两;二两;三两) - so be sure to point this out to the server.

Types of Guilin Rice Noodles

There are several variations of Guilin Rice Noodles. Each type is popular and is often the cheapest Guilin street food, priced at only 3 to 4 yuan per bowl. The most popular Guilin noodle version is 卤菜粉 (lu-cai-fen) or the gravy-type noodles. It is prepared using a pork bone broth and topped with thin slices of marinated meat, pickled beans, fried peanuts, oi and scallion. Other versions include the broth-type noodles known as 汤菜粉 (tang-cai-fen) and boiled noodles known as 煮粉 (zhu-fen).

Where to Eat Guilin Mifen

Do not worry about not being able to find Guilin Rice Noodles, because it is sold on literally every street in this beautiful town! One of the most famous restaurants is the Chongshan Rice Noodles 崇善米粉. With several branches across Guilin, it has been selling traditional Guilin rice noodles since 1986, and is loved by both locals and foreigners alike.

Bon appétit!

Tuaran Mee: Famous Traditional Food in Sabah

Friday, January 15, 2021
To better understand a culture that is foreign to you, always have it done through your taste buds. Recipes of local food are something that has been passed down for generations. They consist not only of a timeless heritage, but each rich, flavorful bite will unfold a compelling story of its people, the mores, and their way of life for over the centuries.

My strong belief that food is a culture’s best preserved heritance has contributed immensely to my years of cultural exploration, allowing me to appreciate unfamiliar customs by using not just sight, sound, and touch, but also my sense of taste and smell as well.

This time around, I had the chance to savor the much acclaimed Tuaran Mee when I was at Tamparuli, a sub-district of Tuaran located on the west coast of Sabah.

Tuaran Mee at Tamparuli, Sabah

What is Tuaran Mee?

Made from pure egg yolk and flour batter, each mouthful yields a mild and pleasant egg aroma which flavor oozes out gracefully with each chaw. You’ve never really tasted eggs until you give these noodles a try. Springy, chewy, and saturated with egg essence, Tuaran Mee gives eggs the glory they deserve. Topped typically with Hakka egg rolls, pork strips, Char Siew (sweet BBQ pork), fish cakes, and vegetables - this Tuaran-originated dish is a must-have when one visits Sabah!

Just like Laksa is to Penang, Kolo Mee is to Sarawak, Tuaran Mee is the noodle that truly represents the state of Sabah in Malaysia. This golden-yellow noodle is soaked in the fragrance of the meat, egg and local vegetables and has a slightly crispier edge. As quality is of the essence, the cooks that prepare the dish always use fresh, handmade noodles that are usually denser and incredibly chewy.

Tuaran Mee
Tuaran Mee

History of Tuaran Mee

In the 1970s, Tuaran Mee was known and made as ‘knife-cut’ noodles before machines were introduced to the town. It was traditionally thicker, wider and more rugged in shape. Using the machines, a more ‘modern’ form of Tuaran Mee has been created where the strands are thin and uniform. It is a recipe created by the Nanyang-Chinese of Sabah and has evolved to become what it is today.

Best Tuaran Mee in Sabah

Tuaran noodles can be found in most parts of Sabah, although the most authentic one would, well, be those made in the town of Tamparuli.

Tamparuli is a quiet and small town in the district of Tuaran on the west coast of Sabah, Malaysia. Majority of its population consists of ethnic Dusun and Bajau, as well as people of the Chinese descent. Tuaran is located approximately 30 kilometres from Kota Kinabalu.

Fueled by passions, the experienced team is always prepared to assist their guests to discover excitement and thrills. Today, MIR Adventures has extended its services to include a wide range of out-bound holiday destinations and activities, including the exploration of Mount Siguniang in China.

Gua Damai Extreme Park at Batu Caves

While there are several rock climbing destinations in Malaysia, Gua Damai is the most accessible and convenient site to get to. Located just 15 kilometers away from Kuala Lumpur, this destination offers 120 bolted routes catering to both beginners and advanced climbers.

MIR Adventures Rock Climbing Package

My first guided outdoor rock climbing experience in Malaysia was made possible thanks to Eddie from MIR Adventures. Eddie is an established guide with his name plastered all over Tripadvisor. He is everything that a guide should be - patient, supportive and funny, even when dealing with despairing beginners like myself.

The course started at 8.30am and ended slightly after noon, but the duration varies depending on the pace of the climbers. We were put into a team of about 10 people, which consisted of guides, beginners and first-time climbers. When we arrived at Gua Damai Extreme Park, we spotted Eddie suspended high above the ground, fixing bolted ropes that would later be used by the climbers to ascend the rocky wall.

Batu Caves Climbing Guide

Every climber was supported by a trusty and experienced belayer, whose job was to ensure that the climber does not fall too far by exerting tension on the rope from the ground. The belayers from MIR Adventures also acted as cheerleaders, motivational "screamers" as well as navigators who tell you exactly which pinches to grip on or which gap to stick your foot in.

Batu Cave Rock Climbing Price and Package

MIR Adventures is offering several packages, depending on duration and experience. Listed below are the prices for the rock-climbing packages at the Gua Damai Extreme Park:
    1. Private group rates - 1 pax: RM250 / 2 pax: RM175 / pax
    2. Open group rates - Malaysian: RM105 pax / Non-Malaysian: RM135 pax /Children age 6 - 12 special rate: RM88

Interested in trying out rock climbing for yourself? I highly recommend Eddie from MIR Adventures! You can learn more about the half-day beginner crash course here and here.

How to Get to Gua Damai, Batu Caves

Take a train to the Stesen Komuter Batu Caves to arrive at the Batu Caves complex located in Gombak, which is approximately 20 minutes away from Kuala Lumpur. If you are using the LRT, first make your way to the KL Sentral station and change to the KTM Komuter Line.

I've had a fantastic experience climbing with MIR Adventures at Gua Damai. Unlike my bouldering experience in France, rock-climbing is a lot more challenging as it requires me to climb higher and stay constantly focused. By realizing that a single wrong step could potentially lead to a fall, I got to train myself both mentally and physically to be adept and competent.

Can't wait for the next adventure!
