Masjid Al Hussain Kuala Perlis: Floating Mosque of Perlis

Masjid Al Hussain Kuala Perlis: Floating Mosque of Perlis

While many tourists are familiar with the world-renowned Langkawi, Perlis - a state located just 30 miles from the island - is often overlooked. As Malaysia's most northern state that borders Thailand's Satun province, this smallest state in the country has a lot more to offer beyond just delicious food, traditional morning markets and the majestic limestone hills and caves, such as the historical Gua Kelam which is rich with mining histories and artifacts. Have extra time on hand? Why not visit one of the state's most iconic mosque that is built on the sea?

Masjid Al Hussain Kuala Perlis: Floating Mosque of Perlis

There are several must-see attractions in Perlis, such as the incredibly beautiful Al Hussain Mosque that will surely charm both Muslims and non-Muslims alike. Dubbed as one of the most beautiful mosque in Malaysia, Masjid Al Hussain makes up for what it lacks in size with the most amazing unobstructed view of the Strait of Malacca.

Top Attraction in Perlis

Built next to the Kuala Perlis Jetty, the structure extends over the sea that has helped it to earn the nickname of a floating mosque. When the tide is at its highest, the mosque appears to be drifting over the sea and this view - accompanied with the setting sun, makes the experience extra memorable and magical.

Masjid Al Hussain Kuala Perlis is one of the greatest spots in Perlis to admire the sunset. The unique colour combination of the sky form an enchanting and rather dramatic backdrop for the mosque, while the mellow sea breeze makes the stay worthwhile and delightful. Don't forget to whip out your camera to capture the sweetest shots to bring home!

Architecture of Masjid Al Hussain Kuala Perlis

One of the greatest feature of Masjid Al Hussain is its walls - instead of being painted, it is exquisitely adorned with the most beautiful selection of marble, pebbles, quartz and granite. The uniquely tactile and textured surface enhances the delicate lines on its grand gold-and-blue dome, which is constructed using aluminium and protective Polyvinylidene Diffluoride (PVDF). The mosque also takes pride in its twin minarets which are the world's first hexagonal minarets.

As the sun sets, the building comes alive and is illuminated with outdoor lights with each colour representing the different prayer times of the day. As Perlis is still relatively undeveloped compared to other states in Malaysia, you will find birds and insects such as dragonflies roaming freely around the compound. The peaceful environment allows you to feel calm and humbled as you immerse in the heavenly positive energy.

How to Get to Masjid Al Hussain Kuala Perlis

As there is no direct flight to Perlis, you can hop onto a plane and land at one of the nearest airport either in Alor Setar or Langkawi.

If you are coming by car, take the North-South (PLUS) Highway and make your way to the Changlun- Kuala Perlis highway to arrive at Kuala Perlis - the second-largest town in Perlis. Alternatively, take the ETS train from KL Sentral in Kuala Lumpur and get off at Arau.

The Historical Masjid India Muslim Ipoh, Perak

Thursday, September 24, 2020
Back in the early 19th century, Ipoh was one of the oldest towns in Malaysia known for its booming tin mining industry. Its blossoming success has attracted many immigrants - including the population group of South Indian Muslims. Their presence has left a huge impact on the customs, food, and culture of the local communities and it was then that the “Mamak” culture grew in popularity - a term widely used to describe the confluence of Indian and Malay mores in Malaysia. As offering prayers is one of the compulsory duties that must be carried out by Muslims, it was then essential for the South Indian Muslims to establish a place for gathering and performing their ritual obligations.

According to history, several minor disputes between the local Malay Muslims and the South Indian Muslims have led to the construction of this mosque. The cause of the disputes was likely due to the differences in the way the praying rituals are performed as both follow differing schools of fiqh: Shafiʽi and Hanafi.

This simple yet elegant mosque is known to the locals as the Town Padang Mosque. The name describes its location which is opposite Ipoh Padang – a public playing field next to the St. Michael’s Institution.

History of Masjid India Muslim Ipoh

Masjid India Muslim Ipoh was constructed in 1905 by Indian workmen brought in as labor by a wealthy Indian Muslim tycoon by the name of Shaik Adam Mohammad Ghaus. He was the founder of Kinta Ice Works and Kinta Aerated Water Factory, and was believed to be the sole supplier of ice in the town at that time.

Built at a cost of RM500,000, the mosque was completed in 1908 with a design that was heavily influenced by the Diwan-i-Khas at the Red Fort in Delhi which is a reflection of “Chitya Indian” or Moghul-style architecture. The rectangle-shaped building has a flat terraced roof and verandas on its sides. One of the more distinct features are the scallop cusped arches that are built all around the mosque.

The frontal area of the prayer hall houses the mihrab or a chamber niche that is directed towards Mecca - which is the center direction for prayer. A wooden pulpit or mimbar is placed on the right where the leader of prayer delivers his sermon. As the mosque caters to the Indian Muslim devotees, the sermon is conducted in Tamil. A tall, grandfather clock on the left side of the mihrab tells the time through the round, wall mounted clock built at the top.

Not to be missed is the gigantic chandelier hooked to the sculptured plaster ceiling.

Another interesting feature within the mosque is the green, spiral staircase with gold-painted wrought iron railing.

At the left corner, visitors can find a medium-sized table and a cabinet that are used to display plaques and commemorative items received by the mosque. The natural sunlight brightens the mosque during the day through its long, square-trimmed framed window.

The place for ablution is typically built at the back. The same rules apply at Masjid India Muslim Ipoh where the semi-circular walls with mounted water taps are located at the very end just outside of the prayer hall.

A Heritage Site in Malaysia

Masjid India Muslim Ipoh or the Shaik Adam’s Mosque has been listed as one of Malaysia’s heritage site under the National Heritage Act, 2005. Today, it still stands strong serving the minor Indian Muslim community in Malaysia, specifically of the Hanafi fiqh teachings.

Masjid Alwi Kangar, Perlis: Mosque Built From Egg Whites

History of Masjid Alwi Kangar at Perlis, Malaysia

Masjid Alwi Kangar is named after Raja Syed Alwi Ibni Almarhum Tuan Syed Saffi Jamalullail - the King of Perlis at the time of construction. Its erection began in 1931 after sufficient funds were collected since the early 1920s. The mosque was completed approximately three years later in 1933 with its grand opening being officiated by the King. In 1988, Masjid Alwi was declared a national heritage in Malaysia.

Islam is a beautiful religion. Don’t judge it on the basis of a few Muslims who have committed wrongs. “Islam is not what some Muslims do. It is what all Muslims are supposed to do.” If it is able to transform a non-practitioner like myself into a better, more compassionate human being, imagine what its true teachings can do to others 💙

A Mosque Built From Egg Whites

The remarkability and beauty of the mosque lie beyond its striking classic Mughal architecture that was perfected by craftsmen brought in from India, but also in its rather surprising construction materials: egg white and sand. Due to the unusual building materials required, the mosque took 3 years to complete as a lot of time was spent on sourcing them. Today, the mosque still stands strong and proud even without having any concrete support.

Symbol of Muslim Unity in Perlis

Masjid Alwi Kangar was successfully constructed thanks to the collective donation by Muslim businessmen, tithes (zakat), and allocation by the State Government. The local community also organised small-scale donation drives to assist with the funding efforts, and the construction finally began after over a decade when enough funds were gathered.

The Oldest Mosque in Perlis

Located in the heart of the capital, Masjid Alwi is a stone’s throw away from many other Perlis landmarks such as the Kangar Clock Tower, Muzium Kangar, Galeri Seni Piring Hitam, as well as the colonial State Secretariat Building. Thanks to this, going on a day tour to discover Perlis is a breeze and more time can be spent on admiring the preserved beauty of these buildings rather than on traveling.

Malaysia's Most Iconic Mosque: Masjid Putra Putrajaya

The Most Beautiful Mosques in Malaysia
Malaysia's Most Iconic Mosque: Masjid Putra Putrajaya

Pink-domed and adorned with intricate details, the Putra Mosque of Malaysia has become the country's top attraction due to its astounding architecture and peerless elegance. This relatively new mosque was erected in 1997 and took two years to complete. It is strategically located in adjacent to the Putrajaya Lake, the Prime Minister’s office and the Putra square - all which bear an equal significance to the country.

Read about the 10 Most Beautiful Mosques in Malaysia.

Malaysia's Most Iconic Mosque: Masjid Putra Putrajaya

The Putra Mosque is an exemplary showcase of the evolution of mosque architecture in Malaysia. As a multicultural and multiconfessional country where 61.3 percent of the population practices Islam, most mosques here are an artistic incorporation of traditional Islamic elements inspired by age-long architectural mosque designs, providently refined with bold touches of novelty. The Putra Mosque, in particular, is modeled after the Persian Islamic architecture specifically of the Safavid period, combined with the aesthetics of Arabic motifs. This can immediately be observed the moment one arrives at the mosque, where its grand arch entrance is emblazoned with khat or Islamic calligraphy that bears the very same hallmarks of ancient Persian gates.

Heavy Baghdad Influences

The mosque is constructed using rose-tinted granite and its basement walls are built to resemble that of Morocco's King Hassan Mosque. It is incredibly spacious - having enough room to accommodate up to 15,000 worshipers.

The minaret of the Putra mosque is 116 metres tall and carries heavy influence of Baghdad’s Sheikh Omar Mosque. Its overall mesmerising pink hue is complemented with the scrupulous woodwork on all of its windows and doors. In terms of structure, the modern mosque consists of three major functional areas: a prayer hall, a courtyard and a learning facility.
