Islam in Brunei

As for the implementation of the Syariah Law, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah declared that the first phase of the Syariah Penal Code Law will be enforced in the country beginning May 1st in 2014.
Islam has long played an important part in Brunei's socio-political environment. It provides legitimacy and authority to the country's absolute monarch and helps to sustain allegiance to both the governing system and the hierarchical structure of the Bruneian society.

Masjid Omar Ali Saifuddien, Brunei
Thursday, December 16, 2021
Deemed as one of the most beautiful mosques in Asia Pacific, Masjid Omar Ali Saifuddien of Brunei Darussalam grandly showcases the work of modern Islamic architecture combining Mughal and Malay styles - making it one of the top attractions in the Islamic country.
After so many years, this mosque still stands to be the prominent landmark of Brunei as it is beautifully designed with tall trees and well-maintained flower gardens. The prayer hall of the mosque can accommodate up to 3,000 people at one time.
The mosque’s 52-meter marble minaret makes it the tallest building in central Bandar Seri Begawan. In the past, the Bank of Brunei building had to remove its top storey by order of the Sultan when it was found that it unintentionally exceeded the height limit in comparison to the mosque. In the eyes of the locals, the mosque shall be the center of attention, allowing everyone to see it from anywhere in the city and hear the call of prayers.
Entering the mosque hall used for prayer, visitors will quickly notice the luxurious interior features such as grand arches, semi-domes, solid marble columns, and intricately stained glass windows. The finest materials were selected from abroad; including carpets from Saudi Arabia and Belgium, cascading crystal chandeliers from England, huge timber doors curated in the Philippines, granite tiles from Shanghai, and exquisite marble from Italy.
Historically, the place where the mosque was built – Kampung Ayer, consists of a traditional stilt settlement area. It is very interesting to observe the surroundings of Kampong Ayer, which houses nearly 10% of Brunei’s total population. It has been nicknamed as ‘Venice of the East’ due to its social and economic interaction. Water villages in the Kampong Ayer district are mostly interconnected by bridges and walkways or accessible by water transport such as water taxis. Take a moment and indulge in the uniquely beautiful scenes of locals fetching and commuting using these boats from one floating village to the next!

The uniquely tactile and textured surface enhances the delicate lines on its grand gold-and-blue dome. The mosque also takes pride in its twin minarets which are the world's first hexagonal minarets.

Historical Masjid India Muslim Ipoh: Perak Mosque, Malaysia
Thursday, September 24, 2020
Back in the early 19th century, Ipoh was one of the oldest towns in Malaysia known for its booming tin mining industry. Its blossoming success has attracted many immigrants - including the population group of South Indian Muslims. Their presence has left a huge impact on the customs, food, and culture of the local communities and it was then that the “Mamak” culture grew in popularity - a term widely used to describe the confluence of Indian and Malay mores in Malaysia. As offering prayers is one of the compulsory duties that must be carried out by Muslims, it was then essential for the South Indian Muslims to establish a place for gathering and performing their ritual obligations.
Historical Masjid India Muslim Ipoh: Perak Mosque, Malaysia
According to history, several minor disputes between the local Malay Muslims and the South Indian Muslims have led to the construction of this mosque. The cause of the disputes was likely due to the differences in the way the praying rituals are performed as both follow differing schools of fiqh: Shafiʽi and Hanafi.
This simple yet elegant mosque is known to the locals as the Town Padang Mosque. The name describes its location which is opposite Ipoh Padang – a public playing field next to the St. Michael’s Institution.
The Historical Masjid India Muslim Ipoh, Perak |
History of Masjid India Muslim Ipoh
Masjid India Muslim Ipoh was constructed in 1905 by Indian workmen brought in as labor by a wealthy Indian Muslim tycoon by the name of Shaik Adam Mohammad Ghaus. He was the founder of Kinta Ice Works and Kinta Aerated Water Factory, and was believed to be the sole supplier of ice in the town at that time.
Built at a cost of RM500,000, the mosque was completed in 1908 with a design that was heavily influenced by the Diwan-i-Khas at the Red Fort in Delhi which is a reflection of “Chitya Indian” or Moghul-style architecture. The rectangle-shaped building has a flat terraced roof and verandas on its sides. One of the more distinct features are the scallop cusped arches that are built all around the mosque.
There are two pointed minarets and a single pyramidal dome that caps the prayer hall. |
The scallop cusped arches are just one of the many unique features of the mosque. |
A separate square entrance gateway leads into the mosque compound. The overall mosque is painted white with strokes of green lining. |
Stepping into the mosque reveals an interior that is embellished with beautiful Arabesque based geometric and floral Islamic design tiles that can be seen decorating the walls and pillars. |
Floral Islamic design can be seen on the tiles around the mosque |
The floors are covered with bright red carpet lined with white and yellow markers. |
Architecture of Masjid India Muslim Ipoh
The frontal area of the prayer hall houses the mihrab or a chamber niche that is directed towards Mecca - which is the center direction for prayer. A wooden pulpit or mimbar is placed on the right where the leader of prayer delivers his sermon. As the mosque caters to the Indian Muslim devotees, the sermon is conducted in Tamil. A tall, grandfather clock on the left side of the mihrab tells the time through the round, wall mounted clock built at the top.
Not to be missed is the gigantic chandelier hooked to the sculptured plaster ceiling. |
Another interesting feature within the mosque is the green, spiral staircase with gold-painted wrought iron railing. |
At the left corner, visitors can find a medium-sized table and a cabinet that are used to display plaques and commemorative items received by the mosque. The natural sunlight brightens the mosque during the day through its long, square-trimmed framed window.
The place for ablution is typically built at the back. The same rules apply at Masjid India Muslim Ipoh where the semi-circular walls with mounted water taps are located at the very end just outside of the prayer hall.

Heritage Site in Malaysia
Masjid India Muslim Ipoh or the Shaik Adam’s Mosque has been listed as one of Malaysia’s heritage site under the National Heritage Act, 2005. Today, it still stands strong serving the minor Indian Muslim community in Malaysia, specifically of the Hanafi fiqh teachings.

Masjid Alwi Kangar at Perlis, Malaysia
Friday, September 4, 2020
A trip to Perlis will not be complete without a brief stopover at Masjid Alwi Kangar, which is a major landmark with significant history. Situated in the capital of Kangar, it was a former state mosque that was constructed during the British Colonial period.

Masjid Alwi Kangar at Perlis, Malaysia
History of Masjid Alwi
Masjid Alwi Kangar is named after Raja Syed Alwi Ibni Almarhum Tuan Syed Saffi Jamalullail - the King of Perlis at the time of construction. Its erection began in 1931 after sufficient funds were collected since the early 1920s. The mosque was completed approximately three years later in 1933 with its grand opening being officiated by the King. In 1988, Masjid Alwi was declared a national heritage in Malaysia.
Mosque Built From Egg Whites
The remarkability and beauty of the mosque lie beyond its striking classic Mughal architecture that was perfected by craftsmen brought in from India, but also in its rather surprising construction materials: egg white and sand. Due to the unusual building materials required, the mosque took 3 years to complete as a lot of time was spent on sourcing them. Today, the mosque still stands strong and proud even without having any concrete support.
A Symbol of Muslim Unity
Masjid Alwi Kangar was successfully constructed thanks to the collective donation by Muslim businessmen, tithes (zakat), and allocation by the State Government. The local community also organised small-scale donation drives to assist with the funding efforts, and the construction finally began after over a decade when enough funds were gathered.
Masjid Alwi Kangar is a symbol of Muslim unity in Perlis |
The Oldest Mosque in Perlis
Located in the heart of the capital, Masjid Alwi is a stone’s throw away from many other Perlis landmarks such as the Kangar Clock Tower, Muzium Kangar, Galeri Seni Piring Hitam, as well as the colonial State Secretariat Building. Thanks to this, going on a day tour to discover Perlis is a breeze and more time can be spent on admiring the preserved beauty of these buildings rather than on traveling.

Malaysia's Most Iconic Mosque: Masjid Putra Putrajaya
The Putra Mosque is an exemplary showcase of the evolution of mosque architecture in Malaysia. As a multicultural and multiconfessional country where 61.3 percent of the population practices Islam, most mosques here are an artistic incorporation of traditional Islamic elements inspired by age-long architectural mosque designs, providently refined with bold touches of novelty. The Putra Mosque, in particular, is modeled after the Persian Islamic architecture specifically of the Safavid period, combined with the aesthetics of Arabic motifs. This can immediately be observed the moment one arrives at the mosque, where its grand arch entrance is emblazoned with khat or Islamic calligraphy that bears the very same hallmarks of ancient Persian gates.
