Best Hiking Trails at Fraser's Hill

Bishop Trail

The popular Bishop Trail lends its name to Reverend CJ Ferguson-Davie, the very man who helped discover Fraser's Hill back in 1917. The bishop recommended to the British government for the hill to be developed into a resort. His initial plan for the trail was to connect his cottage to the nearby Muar and Cicely bungalows. Today, it offers visitors an amazing hiking experience through the woods, featuring steep inclines and descends. The area is also ideal for bird-watching or just an unhurried, leisurely stroll.

Difficulty: Moderate
Hike duration: 1 hour 30 minutes
Hike distance: 1.5 kilometres

Hemmant Trail

The trail head can be found behind the mosque along the Genting Road, which is right opposite the Abu Suradi trail head. Hemmant Trail is an easy 1 kilometer hike with slight ascend in the first quarter while the rest of the journey is a breezy walk on flat terrain. You will be wandering across the edges of the Fraser's Hill Golf Course, passing through tall trees and dense shrubs. The last quarter of the trek can get muddy with the presence of leeches - especially when it rains. You will exit at a paved road located at a junction between the Muar Cottage and the Glen Bungalow.

Difficulty: Easy
Hike duration: 35 minutes
Hike distance: 1 kilometre

Mager Trail

The 350-meter Mager Trail is a relatively simple climb. It is named after the British engineer who oversaw Fraser's Hill's initial construction as a colonial rest area in 1918, known as FW Mager. He worked for the colonial government, helping to survey the land and choose locations that would be ideal for constructing bungalows and asphalt roads.

In 1921, he finished building the Gap road, which used gates to alternate one-way traffic up and down the highlands. He quit his position shortly after 1922 to work as a state engineer in Perak. Even now, automobiles can only access Fraser's Hill through the Gap road; a more recent road was constructed for traffic going downwards. Just before the town centre, the tail comes to an end close to the Gap exit.

Difficulty: Easy
Hike duration: 10 minutes
Hike distance: 350 metres

Pine Tree Hill Trail

The 1,500-meter-high mountain called Pine Tree Hill is nestled within the dense, green forest. The trailhead is accessible from High Pines road, right before the bungalow near Seri Intan. The 5.5 km-long trail is still Fraser's Hill's most difficult trekking route. The coniferous trees that once dotted the mountain are the source of the name. Five indigenous conifer species of dacrydiums were of particular note; they are now all but extinct from the peak. The trail winds up and down over several tops and ridges, before concluding at the top. On clear days, a panoramic view of the surrounding mountains and forests may be seen.

Difficulty: High
Hike duration: 7 hours
Hike distance: 5.5 kilometres

Abu Suradi Trail

The 500-meter Abu Suradi Trail is a quick and easy climb that is suited for hikers of all ages. It bears the name of the first recipient of a mining lease for Pamah Lebar, who ran the tin mine from 1899 to the cancellation of his lease in 1902. The hike starts off along Genting Road just across from the mosque and ascends uphill across a moderately steep incline before turning onto a level path. The track is wide and easy to travel, occasionally having buttressed roots and muddy patches, but seldom (if ever) having leeches. The end of the track is where the Mager Trail begins.

Difficulty: Easy
Hike duration: 15 minutes
Hike distance: 500 metres

Kindersley Trail

The short Kindersley Trail begins at the playground beside the Parr Bungalow at a junction. After around 300 metres of ascent, the track ends at a paved road that leads to the Methodist Bungalow. It's a short yet hilly climb with various herbs, bushes, and little flowers to see along the way. RCM Kindersley, a member of the original Fraser's Hill Development Committee in charge of creating the highland hideaway during colonial times, is honoured by the trail's name. The trail was first made available in 1919 so that British officials could travel from their homes to the Methodist Mission.

Difficulty: Easy
Hike duration: 10 minutes
Hike distance: 300 metres

Maxwell Trail

The entrance to Maxwell Walk lies along the Quarry Road. It can be found near the exit to Kuala Lumpur, just adjacent to the school and Corona Nursery. Due to the muddy and slippery terrain which is densely covered with fallen leaves, this trail is the least popular of all the treks. At Jalan Lady Maxwell, it connects to the Bishop Trail, which takes travellers back to the city. Carrying salt is strongly advised because of the trail's well-known leech infestation. Maxwell Trail offers similar sights and atmosphere to the Bishop trail, but the former is darker because of the thickly covered forest. The journey is around two kilometres long, with generally level terrain but also some difficult sections.

Difficulty: High
Hike duration: 1 hour 30 minutes
Hike distance: 1.8 kilometres

Rompin Trail

Rompin Trail is a 500-metre journey that takes place on a hilly slope. It is a steep ascent and descent through a forest tucked on a slope. Ropes, wooden fences, and railings are installed to help hikers get around the difficult terrain. In order to provide quick access to town, residents of the Taman Sungai Hijau Flats carved out the Rompin Trail in the late 1980s. Prior to that, they had to walk a long distance on the dirt road that passed the Smokehouse Hotel. Be careful when it rains because the walkway can become very hazardous and slick.

Difficulty: Easy
Hike duration: 15 minutes
Hike distance: 500 metres
