The village of Kubang Badak is home to a unique tidal river estuary ecosystem. It is packed with geological diversity, pristine mangroves and a rich cultural history of the early Thai settlements. The main attraction here is the BioGeoTrail, a project which is the result of a strategic partnership between the Langkawi Development Authority, the Langkawi Research Centre, and Sungai Kubang Badak Langkawi Limited. Sightseeing at MAHA Tower
The spanking new MAHA Tower or Menara MAHA is the next biggest attraction in Kuah, Langkawi. It stands at 138 meters tall with a robust steel structure. Tourists will have the opportunity to climb to the viewing deck located about 102 meters above sea level to see the city, even as far as the beautiful Tasik Dayang Bunting. It is named after Malaysia's former prime minister, Tun Mahathir, who officiated the launch. This prestigious tower is expected to launch in 2022.

The best way to get to know Limbang is to visit the Limbang Regional Museum. This wooden museum is located 200 metres away from the Limbang River. The original building was an old fort built in 1897 and was burnt down in 1989. It was then rebuilt on the exact site, keeping to the original architecture and design. Apart from having archaeological and ethnic artefacts, this museum displays the history and culture of the Limbang community in the form of bead works, bark cloth, salt making, bamboo bands and many more.

Try the Exotic Tahai & Beritus Fish
Different parts of Limbang offer their own unique sets of attractions. The water village in Limbang is known as the producer of cheap and tasty smoked fish known as Tahai and Beritus. These smoked fish are seasoned with salt and are usually deep fried to be served with white rice. Other famous local fish include the Soon Hock fish or Ikan Batutu, as well as the Ikan Sema river fish from the Limbang River. For a little adventure, discover the trails of Bukit Mas of Limbang. It has a long flight of stairs which starts from the lake garden of Tasik Bukit Mas leading to the summit of a jungle-clad limestone outcrop of approximately 210-metre tall. At the summit, you have the opportunity to get an excellent glimpse of nearby Brunei.

The remote highland village of Ba’kelalan in Limbang is famous for apples, organic vegetables and salt spring. If you happen to be dropping by Ba’kelalan, a salt factory visit at Buduk Bui is not to be missed. You can learn about the salt production process involving the boiling of the spring water.
During the trip to this village, you may get a taste of ethnic Lun Bawang food. A unique dessert that can be found here is called Ekor Kuyuk - which is made from Beras Jawa or Javanese Rice cooked in coconut milk and pandan leaves extract.. This dish is not easily available as Beras Jawa is very expensive, costing as much as RM100 per bushel. If you would like to try, an order has to be placed a day earlier.

Night Cruise at Limpaki Wetland
A great way for enjoying the nature in Limbang is through a canoe trip during the day. Alternatively, you can book a night cruise at the Limpaki Wetland, which is a mangrove site with a beautiful glistening river. History of Miri, Sarawak
Miri is the second largest city in Sarawak. It was founded when the first oil well was drilled by the Royal Dutch Shell in 1910. Miri is located close to the border of Brunei, in the coastal area of north-western Sarawak.

Chinese Population in Miri
People from Miri are known fondly as ‘Mirians’. About 32% of Mirians are Chinese. Their significant numbers greatly influence the Miri community in terms of social interaction, economy, religion, as well as the education sector.
The biggest Chinese group in Miri is of the Foochow ancestry. This is followed by the Hakka and Cantonese, with a small number of Teochew and Hainanese. It has been known for a long time that the Chinese are excellent tradesmen and businessmen. This explains the rapid development of Miri in becoming a city as the early Chinese settlers have set up markets and shophouses here. Today, these shophouses across the town still preserve the same atmosphere.

Miri Markets & Chinese Food Court
In the heart of Miri, you may find the Miri United Hawkers Association building and the Unity Food Centre. These are common places for the local Chinese community to mingle and socialise. There are sections within the wet markets that serve Miri famous food from day till night. Among the famous unique dishes which can be discovered here include pig’s stomach cooked with pineapple and pig blood curd with chives.

Chinese Temples in Miri
The Chinese community in Miri are free to hold any respective religious processions. It is interesting to know that there are two notable Chinese temples in Miri; one was a century old temple and the other is a new temple being maintained to serve the Buddhism teachers.
Tua Pek Kong Chinese Temple was founded in 1913. It is one of the few historical buildings to survive the allied bombing in Miri during the World War II. This temple was believed to be dedicated to a monk who helped cure an epidemic which plagued Miri in the early days.
The other famous temple is the Lian Hua San Ching Tian temple. It was built in 2000 and became the largest Taoist temple in Southeast Asia that boasts majestic figures of the Three Pure Ones.

Education & Chinese Schools in Miri
The Chinese community in Miri is very particular when it comes to having Chinese education. There are about 14 Chinese independent schools across Miri, Pujut and Lutong area. The formal education provides syllabus in Mandarin. Due to this, the younger Chinese generation in Miri tend to use Mandarin rather than their Chinese dialects of Foochow or Hokkien.
Chinese Festival & Bazaar
The best time for gatherings can be observed annually when the Gong Xi Fa Chai Bazaar is grandly held a few weeks before the Chinese New Year. There will be stalls opening daily selling food and drinks, clothes, decorative items, potted plants, paintings, and handicrafts. In the evening, there will be various entertainment programs lined up such as lion and dragon dances as well as karaoke. This event is one of the hidden gems in Miri.
