Phousi Hill Trail Map

If you're travelling to Luang Prabang, scaling the heights of Mount Phousi is a rite of passage. This towering hill stands at an impressive 100 metres above sea level and is located right in the heart of the old town. Fear not, as the ascent to the summit is a relatively easy climb of just 300 steps, making it accessible to anyone in good physical shape.

Once you reach the top, you'll be greeted with a stunning panoramic view of the city's numerous temples, quaint architecture, and the distant mountains that encircle it. But the journey doesn't end there. A further set of stairs leads to two exquisite Buddhist temples - Wat Chom Si and Wat Tham Phousi. How to Get to Mount Phou Si

You have the choice of two starting points to begin your ascent to the summit. The first option is situated opposite the Royale Palace Museum near the vibrant night market. This route is shorter, making it ideal for those who want a brisk climb. The second starting point is located on Thanon Phousi, by the peaceful Nam Khan River. Although this route is slightly longer, it offers a plethora of breathtaking views along the way.

To make the most of your Mount Phou Si experience, we recommend ascending via the first route and descending via the second. This way, you can take in the stunning scenery from both sides of the hill, and witness the beauty of Luang Prabang from all angles.

Best Time to Visit Phou Si Hill

Many visitors prefer to climb the mountain in the morning or evening to catch the incredible sunrise and sunset respectively. However, it is advisable to make your way there before the sunrise if you want to avoid the crowd. If you arrive at the right time, you will get the chance to see the daily alms-giving ceremony that takes place on the streets of Luang Prabang.

Important Hiking Tips

One thing that you should keep in mind is that this mountain is considered to be a sacred place by the locals. You will discover temples and statues of deities along the way. Plan your trip and time accordingly if you wish to visit these holy sites.

Prepare hiking essentials such as torchlight, enough water to keep you hydrated, and insect repellent. Torchlight is a must as it is extremely dark especially if you are planning on going before the sun rises.
Wear appropriate attire that is not only suitable for hiking, but also modest and respectful as you are entering a holy site.

Bring pocket money – you will find vendors selling flowers which you can buy and present at the temples as an offering.

Tickets & Entrance Fees

There is an entrance free of 20,000 kips for visitors to Mount Phou Si at Luang Prabang. You are required to pay this amount of money at the halfway point on your way up.
